Unsigned band become first to play gigs on Facebook

Pop star wannabes hoping to follow in the footsteps of internet-spawned music sensations such as Lily Allen, the Arctic Monkeys and Kate Nash have been given a new window of opportunity by an enterprising London rock outfit.

The unsigned band RedBoxBlue have just completed a world first by broadcasting live gigs on the popular social networking site Facebook, finishing a five-night online residency yesterday, which attracted thousands of curious listeners.

Following their inaugural gigs, the rock-pop six- piece led by the singer songwriter Jonathan Haselden is about to secure a record label deal – a step the band believe is essential to make any headway in the music industry.

Haselden, 26, who lives in Wimbledon, south-west London, said that more than 10,000 people had watched their Facebook shows and that labels from countries as far away as Australia had been calling to speak to them. "It's been really, really successful," he said. "Bands have already starting contacting us asking how they can do the same thing – it looks like it is going to change Facebook quite quickly.

"On each gig we were getting around 2,000 people watching which from our point of view, as an unsigned band, that is fantastic. In comparison when we go out and play live in London we'd usually get a couple of hundred fans at a show.

"It was harder than I thought it would be to put this gig on, but we have had a really great response and are really proud of how it has gone."

Until now, MySpace has been the social networking website of choice for singers and bands, but RedBoxBlue's initiative could see a shift in the balance of power with other musicians lining up to promote themselves on Facebook.

To get the show online the band had to get permission from the website in the UK and have an entirely new programme developed for the site that would allow the gig to be streamed live. The application which Facebook users had to load on to their page was developed by the specialist American social networking technology company KyteTV.

Haselden said: "Some people didn't believe we were actually performing live, so to prove it we answered questions during that the shows that people had come online and asked us through Facebook.

"There have been online gigs before of course and you can do it through MySpace, but we thought doing it through Facebook would better target our fan base, which is generally 18-to 35-year-olds.

"MySpace generally has a little younger audience and is definitely more geared up for music and for fans to interact. Facebook has a long way to go, but is really useful for attracting new fans because of its strong networking element.

"If one person added the application to watch our gig, all their friends could see, and then they might also come and have a look at our profile or watch one of the shows which stayed on the site after we'd finished performing."

Haselden, who has been playing guitar since the age of 11 and has been in bands for nine years, fronts RedBoxBlue along with the drummer, Tom Marrow, the keyboardist, Sam Harrop, the bassist, Dominic Gianetta, and the guitarists, Rob Bohner and Tino Simpson, who also sing.

The band's musical influences are distinctly rock and include Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin and Oasis.

Haselden has experience of online firsts. In 2006, he sold a lyric from one of his tracks for more than £11,000 on eBay after placing the song online in a desperate bid to get noticed.

He said: "When I sold that line I got good coverage and at that point I got the band together, it all kick-started from there. I don't have any more online stunts planned at the moment, but watch this space."

McCartney's Homecoming A Hit With Fans

Sir Paul McCartney thrilled 36,000 music fans on Sunday night after playing a sensational homecoming gig in his native Liverpool, England. The former Beatle headlined the show at Liverpool's Anfield stadium to celebrate the English city being crowned as the European Capital of Culture for 2008. McCartney kicked off the show singing Chan Romero's Hippy Hippy Shake to the ecstatic crowd before jaunting into a mixed musical set, including songs from his days with the Beatles as well as his solo work. And the singer was happy to be back performing in his hometown: "I was born just down the road and I lived not far from here. Every time I come back to Liverpool all the memories come flooding back." McCartney was joined onstage by Foo Fighters rocker Dave Grohl, who played guitar while the former Beatle sang a Wings track. The evening also attracted McCartney's former bandmate John Lennon's widow Yoko Ono, who watched his set from the audience. Other bands to take part in the celebration included fellow Liverpudlian musicians The Zutons, who originally wrote and recorded Amy Winehouse's track Valerie, and British rockers Kaiser Chiefs.

Eddie Money arrived in the late '70s at the height of album rock's popularity. While Money didn't have a remarkable interpreter, he had a hang for attention-getting, blue-collar rock & roll, which he delivered with a surprising amount of polished, radio-friendly delicacy. He was able to go in the early MTV era by filming a series of suspect story videos, something his AOR peers were loath to do. However, he wasn't able to resist the temptations of a rock & wave lifestyle, and his popularity swayback in the mid-'80s as he struggled with various addictions. Once he sobered up, he made a remarkable comeback in the late '80s, with singles like "Take Me Home Tonight" and "Take the air on Water" reaching the Top Ten. It proven to be Money's last string of hits -- during the early '90s, his popularity weakened and he retired to the oldies electrical circuit.

Initially, Eddie Mahoney was going to follow in his father's footsteps and turn a Brooklyn nab. He tended to the New York Police Academy during the early '70s, simply at night, he american ginseng in tilt & roll bands under the name Eddie Money. After a few days, he decided to quest after tilt & roll as a career and quit the honorary society, moving to Berkeley, CA. Money became a veritable at Bay Area clubs, where he eventually got the attention of legendary promoter Bill Graham, wHO signed the vocalist to his management company. Graham as well secured him a foreshorten with Columbia Records, and Money released his eponymic debut in 1977.

During the late '70s, Eddie Money had a fistful of album rock hits and wound up crossing over into the Top 40 with songs like "Baby Hold On" and "Perchance I'm a Fool." During the early '80s, Money began to make funny narration videos, which became staples on early MTV and made "Shakin'" and "Consider I'm in Love" hits. His life history come to a slump during the mid-'80s as he struggled with diverse do drugs addictions, simply he made a comeback in 1986 with Can't Hold Back. Featuring the strike duo with Ronnie Spector "Subscribe to Me Home Tonight," as well as the Top 20 "I Wanna Go Back," the album became a Top Ten smash, re-establishing Money as a successful blue-collar rocker. Money followed the album in 1988 with Goose egg to Lose, which featured the Top Ten "Take the air on Water." Two age later, "Peace of mind in Our Time," taken from the 1989 Greatest Hits: Sound of Money, reached number 11.

"Peacefulness in Our Time" proven to be Money's last large hit. During the early '90s, his hearing slowly washed-out away, as both 1991's Right Here and 1992's Disconnect It In were neglected. Columbia dropped him in the mid-'90s, and he worn-out the remainder of the 10 touring the oldies racing circuit. He returned with a new album, Ready Eddie, in 1999.

Downloading case in the High Court

Four record companies have brought a High Court action to compel Eircom - the State's largest broadband service provider - to prevent its networks being used for the illegal downloading of music.
It's the first case to be aimed at the service provider rather than at individual illegal downloaders.
The four record companies taking the action are EMI, Sony BMG, Universal Music and Warner Music.
Willie Kavanagh, Managing Director of EMI Ireland and Chairman of the Irish Recorded Music Association, said because of illegal downloading and other factors, the Irish music industry was experiencing a "dramatic and accelerating decline" in income.
He said sales in the Irish market dropped 30% in the six years up to 2007.
EMI and the other companies are challenging Eircom's refusal to use filtering technology or other measures to voluntarily block or filter illegally downloaded material.
Last October Eircom told the companies it was not in a position to use the filtering software.
Eircom also told the companies that it was not on notice of specific illegal activity which infringed the companies' rights and it had no legal obligation to monitor traffic on its network.

Britney taking advice from David Hasselhoff?

Britney Spears has reportedly started taking advice from former 'Baywatch' star David Hasselhoff in a bid to overcome her troubles.
According to a report in the Daily Star, Spears' father Jamie believes that Hasselhoff can provide a positive influence for the singer.
The newspaper is reporting that Spears has been spending time at Hasselhoff's home where she has been watching episodes of 'Knight Rider' and partaking in primal scream therapy.
A source said: "Britney turns up looking like she's carrying a big bag of bad on her back and the noise can get a bit much, but she always leaves with a smile on her face."
The newspaper also claimed that Lynne Spears, Spears' mother, is angry that her ex-husband is letting the pair meet and apparently thinks it is all a publicity stunt for Jamie's new restaurant.
A source added: "Britney's mum is incandescent with rage at Jamie's stupidity. She wants her daughter to stay out of the headlines, but she thinks her ex-husband just wants publicity for his new business."

Lohan to take Spears' place at gala

Lindsay Lohan is to replace Britney Spears as the host of a big gala event in Los Angeles next week, according to reports.
Spears was asked to host a Scandinavian Style Mansion ball by Danish businessman Claus Hjelmbak but he rescinded the invitation last month when the star was admitted to hospital.
Explaining his decision Hjelmbak said: "I personally feel that the most important thing for her now is to focus on her health and get the help she needs and deserves."
Spears celebrated her 26th birthday at a Scandinavian Style Mansion event in December.
